Around the World in 80 Days!

May 28, 2000

Hard to believe, but the trip is over. We went around the world in 80 days: March 10 through May 28.

While we were traveling, there was a large section of this site devoted to how to find us. Since it's no longer necessary, it has been deleted. However, since the air travel and hotel itineraries may be of interest to some, they've been left up.

Overall, the trip was wonderful. Would we do it again? Absolutely. But there are many things we'd do differently. We'd pack somewhat differently, but not a lot. We'd be sure to book a minimum of three nights in any hotel. We'd stay longer in New Zealand. We'd stay longer in Africa (but then, we did extend this part by several days because we couldn't bear to leave!). There are hotels we'd go back to and some we'd avoid. Details are in the travelogue pages.

If you ever want to plan a trip like this for yourself, send a note. If you want advise on how to pack, send a note – I'm happy to answer. I'll also point you in the direction of Tilly's Adventure Clothing, TravelSmith, and Magellans – everything we bought from these three companies did exactly what it was supposed to do.

The biggest surprise was how much we loved southern Africa. It exceeded our wildest expectations. Even National Geographic cannot do justice to the game reserves. The biggest disappointment was the cancellation of five days of our trip because of the political situation in Zimbabwe. We were booked into the Matetsi Water Lodge for three days, followed by two nights on the Blue Train from Victoria Falls to Pretoria. Both fell through.

Anyway… As you go through our travelogues, remember that we like to think of this as the Curmudgeon's Guide to Five-Star Travel. We hope you enjoy both the text and the photos.
